在准备英文阅读理解的考试,这里摘抄了平时练习题里的长难句分析,欢迎提问和指正!(因为没有上下文,句子可能读起来莫名其妙;也请告诉我哪些句子不好,我可以换成更好的例句;

It was center-left New Labour that presided over the pre-crash bubble, and voters' throw-the-bastards-out reaction brought a series of

Conservative governments that soon discovered that a rhetoric of austerity—the Churchillian evocation of common sacrifice for the public good—played

well with the British public, allowing them to win broad popular acceptance for policies designed to pare down what little remained of the British welfare state and redistribute resources upward, toward the rich.

It was center-left New Labour that presided over the pre-crash bubble,

第二句:and voters' … reaction brought Conservative governments (….)

Conservative governments

… Conservative governments {that soon discovered that (a rhetoric of austerity— … —played well with the British public,

[allowing them to win broad popular acceptance for policies

designed to pare down what little remained of the British welfare state and redistribute resources upward, toward the rich.])}

Milton's language about the creation of angels implies, as Bently pointed out, that they were not created; and Abdiel's official statement that God created

them by the instrumentality of the Son, is in flat contradiction with the moment in which the angels are shown the Son when he is newly begotten.

分号前:Milton's (opinions) implies, … , that they were not created;

= M and Bently

Abdiel's official statement (that …), is in flat contradiction with the moment (in which the angels are shown the Son when he is newly begotten).

Abdiel 认为: God 通过 the Son 创造了angels -括号里that引领的从句

这个场景(the moment):the Son 诞生的时候,一群angels在围观。

They also show that particular kinds of scientists—doctors and other practitioners with a public face—are seen as more trustworthy than remote researchers,

even as suspicions proliferate about the sources of supposed scientific knowledge, whether private corporations or the government.

… (particular kinds of) scientists … are seen as more trustworthy than …, even …

ok, doctors are more trusted than researchers.

as suspicions proliferate about the sources of supposed scientific knowledge, whether private corporations or the government.

as 这里是“随着”,而非“因为" (类似as the development of …)

suspicions 主语

proliferate 谓语 = increase in numbers

While the central otherworldly concerns of the Taoist religion have led some commentators to assert that Taoism is a "religion without religious texts,"

nothing could be further from the truth. The key texts of Taoism may lack the same coherence and historicity of the Talmud or the Qur'an, but there are nonetheless

various works that have profound influence, and no small authority among nearly all Taoist sects.

What is the author's opinion on Taoism (道教)?

While (…Taoism has no religious texts), nothing could be further from the truth.(…compared to other religions), but there are works that have great influence, no small authority…

作者列举了一些人对道教的偏见 (no texts, no influence, no authority),但是作者马上就反驳了这些观点。

看到 While/Although/but/however/yet

There is little doubt in my mind that the world today would look different if the progress of science had been anchored in our human reality instead of losing sight of it,

for in that recognition lies an obligation and an unceasing correction: we are no greater than the forest—we are no greater even than the tree.

I believe that the world today would look different if (…some conditions…)

What are the conditions?

science had been anchored to reality, not losing sight.

Nothing makes with greater certainty the earth into a hell, than man's wanting to make it his heaven.

Nothing, with greater certainty than man's wanting to make it his heaven, makes the earth into a hell.

= The "wanting" makes the earth into a hell.

This imperative to avoid being – even appearing – unhappy has led to a culture that rewards a performative happiness, in which people curate public-facing

lives, via Instagram and its kin, composed of a string of "peak experiences" – and nothing else.

The urgency to avoid … unhappy has led to a culture (that rewards fake happiness and nothing else)

A culture

(1). that rewards a performative happiness (in which…) (composed of…)

(2). nothing else

An article about the development of children with intellectual disabilities:

Parents who may accept that their son or daughter has the right to adulthood can still have concerns about the policy agenda that endorses the start of adult life as

an opportunity to take risks, with little regard to other frameworks of social, moral, or emotional development.

Parents (who …) can still have concerns (about … )

parents: they accept that their kids have the right as adults

concern: for the policy: adult = take risks (being responsible), regardless of levels of mental development. (The policy doesn't take other factors into consideration. )

By the early 1920s, the movie theater had replaced the playhouse as the principle arena for the consumption of entertainment, drawing vast audiences from across the social spectrum;

Los Angeles had replaced New York City as the show-business capital of the United States; and screen acting had emerged as a discrete area of artistic endeavor which owed less and less to the performance conventions of the American stage.

第1句:By the early 1920s, the movie theaterhad replacedthe playhouse (as…);

= The cinema became popular

LA replaced NYC as … capital of the US.

"capital" = LA is probably the #1 city for movie shows

NYC used to be a "show-business city", but more likely for plays

第3句: screen acting had emerged as a discrete area of artistic endeavor (which owed less and less to the performance conventions of the American stage).

是凭空被created,还是transfored from other acting?

(which owed…) 马上就解释了:越来越不像stage acting了(=film actors began to resemble stage actors less and less)。

Poor minority women who live outside the law, due to prostitution or drug use, have always lived with risk. They prioritize time and attention on the risk of AIDS

relative to other concerns such as protecting their children, securing financial resources, and simply acquiring basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

(Poor minority)women (who live outside the law), due to prostitution or drug use, have always lived with risk.

第2句进一步解释了第1句, especially the part "due to prostitution or drug use":They prioritize time/attentionon the risk of … relative to other concerns …

The 2nd sentence gives a reason for the phenomenon described in the first sentence:

Those women (2 conditions: poor + minority) 有更重要的事情, concerns, to worry about

He was equally obsessed with absolute darkness as the most powerful instrument to induce that state of fundamental terror claimed by Burke as the instigator of the sublime.

(前文:he was obsessed with something)

"equally obsessed" = the second object that he obsessed with

He was … obsessed with absolute darkness {as the most powerful instrument [to induce that state of fundamental terror (claimed by Burke as the instigator of the sublime)]}.

He: darkness = terror

Burke: terror = starter of greatness (不重要)

He obsessed with absolute darkness + To him, darkness = terror

The 1860 meeting of the British Association, at which Thomas Huxley started his career as Darwin's publicist and gave that resounding snub to Bishop

Wilberforce, was held at Oxford where Carroll was already in residence. He had met Alfred Tennyson in 1856, and we hear of Tennyson lecturing him on the likeness of monkey's and men's skulls.

The 1860 meeting …, at which Huxley did something good, was held at Oxfordwhere Carroll lived there. ||| He had met Tennyson in 1856, and we hear of Tennyson telling himon the likeness of monkey and human.

He knew about the similarity between monkey and human from Tennyson
